Welcome to West Point Sr Sec School, Tathangchen, East Sikkim

West Point Senior Secondary School is presently located in quiet and serene surroundings near King’s Palace (Guard Ground) in Gangtok. This school started its journey formally in another location near Gangtok bazaar( Police Headquarters) under the strong and dedicated leadership of Mrs. Santosh Nirash as its first Headmistress. The school was run entirely by volunteers of H.R.H King Palden Thendup Namgyal who gave the name West Point School after his return from one of his trips to abroad. Mr. B P Sinha, a retired Army Officer was made in-charge of the school in the year 1963 after Mrs. Santosh Nirash’s tenure. The school was upgraded to class VI and each class had more than 8 sections. The school became a Junior High school then.

 

In 1966 Mr. Uma Nath Sharma took the charge of the school from Mr. B P Sinha. After the tenure of Mr. Uma Nath Sharma, Mrs. Shanti Pradhan became the new headmistress of this school in the year 1972. Mrs. Senora Pradhan became the first official headmistress of a secondary school in 1979. She served the school till 1983. In 1984 Mrs. Shanti Chettri joined this school as secondary headmistress and served up to 1987. After that period Mrs. Milan Basnet took charge of this school.

In 1993 the Education department had upgraded this school from secondary level to Senior Secondary level with Humanities stream because of popular demand. At this juncture school needed a principal as per the rule, so Mrs. Arati Rai who was transferred from Deorali Girls school took the charge of the school.

Dr S N Mishra, the longest serving principal of this school, took the charge as a principal in the year 1995. During his tenure school elevated to a new high with full support from all stakeholders.

In 2008 Mrs. Mridula Suba became the principal of this school and served this institution up to 2009. In 2009 West Point School had celebrated its Golden Jubilee Year under Mrs. Mridula Subba.

Mrs. Pemba Lhamu came to this school with a lot of enthusiasm in the capacity of a principal in 2011 and brought some changes in the school during her stay. From 2012 two new academic wings Science and Hotel Management (as a Vocational Stream) was introduced in the school. A new science block was opened and accommodated for the science stream. Looking at the increasing discipline-related problems Mrs. Pemba Lhamu installed a number of CCTV cameras in and around the school premises.

Presently Mrs. Indira Poudyal is the principal of this school. She has taken the charge from Pemba Madam in the year 2018 and initiated some fruitful measures to bring a positive footprint in the school education system. All stakeholders are constantly being interacted for genuine cause of academic improvement. West point school always prefer to nurture the best outcome from all undecided young minds as our curriculum matches the learners’ needs, aspirations and capacities. The school takes into account in promoting personal development through quality enhancement by adopting various innovative practices. School is also paying a strong look up into remedial classes for average and weak students to bring out the best.
